Get back to the basics of Sculpting!
The popularity of digital sculpting in recent years has produced a plethora of incredible artworks. Artists like Kolby Jukes, Rafael Grasseti, and Furio Tedeschi have showcased the creative potential and opportunity offered by digital sculpting that you and I can tap into. The only thing standing in our way is the time required to hone our sculpting skill set. So let’s start practicing!
Every now and then I try to take a step back from the grind of technical production work and simply focus on the artistic skill set that is digital sculpting. No thought of retopology for deformation in mind, no consideration of map baking for efficient rendering, just pure sculpture. So in this video I’m walking you through the foundations of my sculpting workflow:
Understand how the interpretation of light and shadow reveals an object’s form.
See how gestural strokes allow for flexible and fast shaping.
Learn the importance of macro shape and form as opposed to micro detail.
Blender’s capable toolset provides us with the perfect playground for honing our sculpting skills. Dynamic topology gives us an infinite amount of “clay” to work with and the brush system equips us with more than enough shaping tools. This video does assume you have a basic understanding of Blender’s interface and Sculpt Mode.
